Food Intolerance Testing

Food intolerance testing can be a useful test for people who suffer from a variety of health concerns such as:

  • Fatigue

  • Bloating

  • Gas

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhoea/Constipation

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  • Reflux, Indigestion

Headaches, eczema and even weight gain are also signs of food intolerances.

How do food intolerances develop?

In a nut shell, food intolerances occur when your immune system reacts inappropriately to a particular food.

The development of food intolerances can begin when the lining of the digestive system becomes inflamed or damaged due to antibiotics, eating processed foods, parasites, alcohol and drug use.

Normally the cells that line the walls of your intestines are packed tightly against each other.  Inflammation or damage to the digestive system lining will allow small gaps to form between the cells that can allow food particles through.  When this occurs it is the beginning of leaky gut.

The immune system, sensing a foreign invader (i.e. food particles in areas where they shouldn’t be) can launch an attack against the food and thus a food intolerance is born.

Leaky gut is involved in the development of food intolerances.

What is the difference between food allergies and food intolerances?

There is a big difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance.

Food allergies are mediated by what is known as an IgE immune response.  Symptoms develop immediately or within a few hours and can be life threatening (anaphylaxis).

Food intolerances however are IgG mediated immune responses.  They are much slower to develop, in the range of hours to days and are not life threatening.

Can food intolerance testing assess Lactose intolerance?

No.  Lactose intolerance is a separate test.

Food intolerance testing is assessing IgG complexes which are formed with the protein portion of the food being tested not the sugar component.

Since lactose is a sugar, lactose intolerance cannot be detected by this method of testing. Other specialised tests are used to determine lactose intolerance that can be arranged within the clinic.

Food intolerance testing at Radiance

We’ve been helping people overcome their food intolerances over the last 15 years.  We’ve used many different companies over that time in the quest to find the most accurate and cost effective food intolerance testing.

We have moved away from testing companies that offer results that are ready within an hour or two because we feel this type of testing is inferior to external laboratory testing.

We now only offer testing that is performed by an accredited laboratory that specialises in food intolerance testing.

We offer several different types of tests to cater for budget whilst not compromising on price.
